Londini 1679 Late 17th-century edition, and the first edition of Herodotus’ History to be coupled with a map, a practice that only began in the mid-17th century, when historical works started to be accompanied by maps to situate events in their geographical framework. Folio (32 × 21 cm). Modern leather over boards. Text clean and bright, in the original Greek with parallel Latin translation. Complete: [66], 708, [34], 33, [44] pp. Includes the rare folded map of Greece and the Levant (48 × 30 cm), with a small tear of c. 2 cm at the upper margin. The map, the major asset of this edition, is not recorded in Zacharakis and is absent from most copies of the book, evidently offered as an optional extra at the time of publication. Overall in a very good plus condition. Edited by Thomas Gale, who based the text on earlier Estienne editions with some improvements, and includes a chapter of Estienne’s notes and commentary. The map is signed by Francis Lamb (active 1667–1701), a minor English engraver and mapmaker of the late 17th century. No other maps of Greece by Lamb are known. Labeled Tabula Geographica ad Herodotum Illustrandum concinnata, it was clearly a made-to-order commission and is of the highest rarity.
