ΘΕΜΙΣΤΙΟΥ [THEMISTIOS ]: ΛΟΓΟΙ ΛΓ [ORATIONES XXXIII]. Paris 1684 First complete edition of all 33 speeches of Themistius. Royal folio (36 × 23 cm). Contemporary full leather, worn, with the royal French emblem of Louis XIV in gilt on both covers, clearly a copy of royal provenance. The fine binding, though handsome, shows wear throughout. Text very clean and bright, with only a few isolated spots on a small number of pages. Greek text with parallel Latin translation. Complete: [30], 550, [8] pp. Overall, a very good copy with notable provenance. Although 8 speeches of Themistius had been published in 1534 and 12 more in 1605 by Petavius in the second edition, it was not until the late 17th century that Johannes Hardouin added the bulk of 13 newly discovered speeches in this third edition, thus providing for the first time the complete body of all 33 speeches that have survived. Themistius, an important 4th-century Greek writer and philosopher from Paphlagonia, moved to Constantinople and became a specialist on Aristotle. He held high governmental positions under several emperors of the later 4th century, and his speeches are a valuable source for early Byzantine society and political culture. Photius praised him, noting that he had composed many commentaries on Aristotle, though even by the 9th century only 36 speeches survived, of which 33 are preserved and published here together for the first time.
