CURTIUS RUFUS: Historie van Alexander den Grooten. Amsterdam 1719 A rare edition in Dutch of Quintus Curtius Rufus’ History of Alexander, finely edited by J. Freinshemius, the renowned Dutch historian and classicist. In 8vo (17 × 11 cm). Full contemporary vellum, very slightly rubbed, internally fine. Complete: engraved frontispiece, title, [17], 610, [28] pp., with 12 copper-engraved plates (ten folding), including one map. This edition is distinct from others of Alexander’s histories, as it contains a different suite of plates. Overall very good plus. Alexander’s expedition remains one of the earliest and largest travel accounts in world history, recording exploration across vast territories of the Levant and deep into Asia. Beyond its accounts of battles and politics, the narrative preserves detailed descriptions of peoples, lands, roads, customs and cities, making it an invaluable historical source. This richly illustrated edition includes finely engraved views of the Levant, executed by leading Dutch artists of the time after original paintings, adding significant artistic and documentary value. Rufus’ History of Alexander was widely edited and translated in Europe, but this Dutch edition is among the most attractive.
