AUGIER GHISLAIN DE BUSBECK: A. Gislenii Busbequii Opera Omnia quae extant. Leiden 1633 First collected edition of Busbecq’s works, including for the first time both the Turkish and French letters. An Elzevir edition. In 16mo (11 × 6.5 cm). Contemporary leather, rubbed with wear; gilt edges. Text clean with some scattered light foxing in a few pages. Complete with engraved frontispiece, 574 pp., plus index. Overall in very good condition. Ogier Ghiselin de Busbecq arrived in Constantinople in 1554 as ambassador to negotiate a treaty. With negotiations dragging on, he remained nearly eight years in the Levant. His invaluable letters provide one of the most informative accounts of the Ottoman Empire at its height, offering detailed observations on politics, society, and daily life. They quickly became the standard Western source on the Ottomans. The Elzevir editions aimed to make such important works more widely accessible by issuing them in reduced format at a time when paper was costly. References: Blackmer 52 (this edition); Atabey 172 (this edition).
