WILLIAM LITHGOW: Willem Litgouws 19 Jarege LandReyse door Europa, Asya en Africa. Amsterdam 1653 Second Dutch edition, the complete edition of Lithgow’s travel accounts. In 4to (21 × 16 cm). Contemporary full vellum, upper cover with fine blind-stamped armorial, manuscript title on spine. Some light wear. Text clean and bright. Engraved frontispiece, title, [4], 187, 97 pp., with six engraved plates. Overall in very good condition. William Lithgow (1582–1643), a Scottish tailor turned hard traveler, first published his travel account in London in 1614. As he continued to journey across Europe, the Levant, and beyond, the work went through many English editions, constantly expanded with his further travels up to the 1630s. Lithgow first visited the Venetian Ionian Islands, Athens, Venetian Crete, and the Archipelago in 1609, spending several months in Chios, where he joined French companions in exploring Greek antiquities. He later returned to the Levant and, in total, claimed to have traveled more than 36,000 miles. His account includes the earliest European reference to coffee drinking, descriptions of Turkish baths, the pigeon post, and the trade in currants from Zante to England. The Dutch editions are rare. Reference: Blackmer 198 (English edition).
