NAUD M.: Voyage nouveau de la Terre Sainte, enrichi de plusieurs remarques… Paris 1679 First edition. 8vo (17 × 10 cm). Contemporary full leather, slightly rubbed; edges of spine chipped. Complete: [18], 671 pp. Title and a few leaves slightly wrinkled; text clean. Overall in very good condition. Michel Naud (1631–1684) travelled to the Levant in 1673–74 in the entourage of the French Ambassador to Constantinople, the Marquis de Nointel. A large party of French, Spanish, Greek, and a few Muslim companions journeyed overland from Constantinople through Anatolia to Syria before reaching Palestine on pilgrimage. Naud provides a very early, detailed, and accurate description of all the important places in the Holy Land. His account stands out for its precise observations and perspective of an experienced traveler, rather than the typical devotional outlook of 17th-century pilgrims. Reference: Not in Atabey; Blackmer 1185 (for the second edition, 1702). The first edition is rare.
