GRAZIANI/PELETIER: Histoire de la guerre de Chypre. Lyon 1686
Second edition in French.
Small 8vo (14.5 × 9 cm). Contemporary full leather, slightly rubbed; spines richly gilt with chipping at ends. Complete: engraved additional title
with a map of Cyprus, [32], 532, 317, [4] pp. Five finely detailed large engraved vignette headpieces. In two volumes. Clean throughout, overall very good condition.
One of the primary accounts of the Ottoman conquest of Cyprus, based on Venetian official dispatches. Graziani’s history became especially relevant during the renewed Ottoman Venetian war of 1683–86. The first part provides a general account of Cyprus.
This edition contains a rare newly drawn map of Cyprus (Zacharakis 1581), absent from the first edition. Introductory and explanatory notes were added by Peletier, Prior of Saint Gemme. The engraved headpieces are masterpieces of 17th-century copper engraving.
