Smith, a chaplain at Constantinople during the second half of the 17th century, acquired a profound knowledge of the Orthodox Church. A part of the book is devoted to Cyrillus Loukaris whim whom the author had close relations. As the Greek Church was omnipresent in everyday life, his account describes in exhaustive detail the sufferings of the Greeks under Ottoman rule, their daily customs (weddings, funerals, feasts, religious ceremonies, and festivities), as well as notable events in Constantinople.
