Febure, a Venetian who lived for many years in the Levant, provides an important early 17th-century account of the Ottoman Empire at the zenith of its power. He meticulously describes every aspect of the Levant: the administration of the Empire, its multinational society, the army, the judicial system, religions, customs, and daily life, with a particular focus on trade, as he was an active member of the mercantile community. Several chapters deal with the Greeks and their position in the Ottoman East. Febure identifies fourteen nations living under Turkish rule. A lengthy and detailed account of peoples, society, customs, and commerce in the region. References: Atabey 420; Blackmer 310.
