VINCENZO PIAZZA: Bona Espugnata, poema… del Cavalieri di San Stefano… Parma 1694 First edition. 8vo (18 × 12 cm). Contemporary full vellum, slightly soiled. Text clean and bright, with occasional light foxing. Complete: title, portrait, 16 pp., 303 pp., and 12 full-page engraved plates depicting naval battles in the Mediterranean against the Turks. Overall very good. This famous poem celebrates the heroic battles of the Knights of San Stefano against the Turks and their exploits throughout the Mediterranean. Founded in Italy, the Order’s main task was to fight the Ottomans at sea. Up to the early 18th century, they were among the elite Christian forces, though they sometimes pillaged indiscriminately along Ottoman coasts, targeting both Muslims and Christians. During the 17th century, they briefly occupied several Greek cities. The poem praises their heroism and victories against the enemies of Christendom. The twelve engraved plates are of particular interest, offering vivid, realistic depictions of Mediterranean battles with the Turks. Not in Atabey or Blackmer.
