[4]; title in red and black, 345 p. [26]; and 2 folded maps and 32 copper engraved plates (19 folding), as called for. Includes a plate about 35 cm long titled The March of the Caravan from Cairo to Mecca. Overall in very good condition. Lucas (1664–1737) was a hard traveler. He visited Greece and the Levant several times during the late 17th and early 18th century and collected many antiquities. His first visit to Greece was when he served with the Venetian army in Negreponte in 1688. In 1696 he returned to France with a substantial quantity of antiquities, and the Royal Cabinet sent him on several missions to collect more. He kept calendars and gathered much information on the places he visited. His precious accounts became classics throughout the 18th century. This edition is very richly illustrated.
