MATHIAS HASSELROT: Resa i Levanten ar 1796. Skara 1805 First edition of a Swedish travel account in the Levant, in 8vo 17 x 11 cm, contemporary leather over boards. Text clean with some scattered spots on a few pages. Complete: 272 p. Manuscript ownership inscription of William St Clair, leading Hellenistic historian, on the front pastedown, with his note: Description of Athens at the time of Elgin. Overall in very good condition and with fine provenance. Hasselrot (1769–1839), a priest, traveled with Pehr Olof von Asp in the Levant in the first half of 1796. They toured extensively in Greece, starting from Corfu and the Ionian Islands, especially Zante where they spent some time, then Patras and the Morea (Vostitsa, Korinth), before reaching Athens. They kept a detailed calendar, allowing the journey to be followed on a daily basis. A very rare early Swedish travel account in the Levant.
