SAMUEL HOWE: An Historical Sketch of the Greek Revolution. New York 1828 First edition of one of the very early American publications on the Greek Revolution. Complete: one colored folded map of Greece, title, [35], 452 p. The map shows tears but no loss and is one of the very first printed American maps of Greece. Overall in good condition. Samuel Gridley Howe (1801–1876), a doctor of medicine, was perhaps the greatest of the American Philhellenes. He came to Greece in 1825, served in the Greek armed forces for years, and provided enormous assistance by securing funds from the United States for the tremendous needs of Greece and its population during the Revolution. He published this comprehensive account of events in Greece in New York, based on his own personal observations and information, primarily to secure additional funds. He returned to Greece after independence in 1828 and focused on aiding the devastated population by financing orphanages and new commercial activities. His main project during this period was the foundation of a new city, “Washingtonia,” in the plain around Korinthos, intended to be populated by refugees from different parts of Greece. Kapodistrias endorsed the project and provided land in Examilia. The Greeks called it Columbia, but after Howe’s departure in late 1829 (due to contracting malaria), the project did not advance, and by the late 1830s only a handful of buildings remained. In 2016, the remnants of Howe’s ambitious project were located and identified. A fine work on the Greek Revolution by the greatest American Philhellene, a very important figure for Greece.
