THOMAS ALLOM .: Constantinople Ancienne et Moderne, comprenant les sept eglises de l Asie Mineure. Paris [1840] First edition in French. Large 4to (28 x 22 cm). Contemporary leather over boards, slightly rubbed. Text and plates clean, with very light scattered spotting in a few places. Collation: [43], 60 p. (first series); 58 p. (second series); 54 p. (third series). With 45 lithographed plates of fine views in total, plus two maps. One signed view of Constantinople, used as frontispiece, comes from another source and appears rare. Text complete. The number of plates is less than in other recorded copies, but editions of this work differ considerably, this copy may represent a proof or variant state. Overall in very good condition. Allom’s classical work on Constantinople and Asia Minor in the 1830s, richly illustrated with finely executed lithographs, remains one of the most attractive 19th-century visual records of the Ottoman capital and its environs.
