Ami Boué travelled extensively in the Balkans during the late 1830s, with particular focus on Macedonia and Thrace.He published his comprehensive account of discoveries in 1840 (Atabey 141), but his detailed travel itineraries were left unpublished until this edition. This work contains his extremely precise day-to-day itineraries, offering unique information on ancient and contemporary routes across Macedonia and Thrace, just before the arrival of railways and modern roads would irrevocably alter Balkan travel. Boué provides astonishing detail on people, villages, landscapes, ethnological composition, trade routes, and commercial trends throughout European Turkey.
