GUPIL FESQUET: Voyage d Hornace Vernet en Orient orne de seize dessins. Paris [1843] First edition. Large 4to (26x18 cm). Contemporary red leather over fine original publisher’s decorated hard covers, slightly faded and rubbed. Inside with some scattered light spotting (typical of the period’s paper), one plate with small tear, a few pages lightly dusty, otherwise mostly clean. Complete: 228 p. and 16 fine lithographed plates, hand-coloured contemporaneously. A very good copy. Horace Vernet (1789–1863), one of the most renowned French Orientalist painters, travelled in 1839 through the newly independent Greece, the Holy Land, and Egypt. The plates, based on his original paintings, rank among the finest lithographic views of the period, richly hand-coloured under Vernet’s direct supervision. A rare and desirable edition, particularly in this first large 4to issue. References: Blackmer 718; Atabey 512 (second octavo edition).
