Hieronymum Commelinum 1596 Second edition in Greek of the works of Kodinos, prepared by George Dousa. In 8vo (18 × 11 cm). Contemporary full vellum, slightly soiled. Text in the original Greek, clean and bright. Complete: 423, 662, [26] pp. Overall a very good copy. This volume contains two of the most important works attributed to the anonymous 15th-century Greek writer conventionally known as Kodinos. The Officialia, written between 1347 and 1368, presents in detail the functions of the imperial palace and the Great Church as they had evolved in the middle Palaiologan period. It is of fundamental importance for understanding late Byzantine society. The Patria of Constantinople treats the history, topography, and monuments of the city, divided into sections: the foundation of Constantinople, its topography by districts, its works of art and notable sights, and in particular the construction of Hagia Sophia. Although probably composed in the 11th century, the text was later copied and preserved under Kodinos’ name. It remains an invaluable source for the Greek period of Constantinople. Finally, Kodinos provides a short chronicle continuing up to the fall of the city to the Ottomans, making this a unique and essential late Byzantine source.
