Bernardinus, a Dutch Franciscan friar, spent several years in the Levant. Beginning his travels in 1644, when Crete was still Venetian, he produced an expansive travelogue practically divided into three sections. The first part is a lengthy travel account en route to the Levant, including two chapters on Crete and Cyprus and another Van der Griecken devoted to the Greeks. He provides a very detailed presentation of Levantine customs and social structures. The main section covers the holy sites of Palestine. The final portion, before his return journey, offers an unusual account of the birds, animals, trees, fruits, stones, and minerals of the Levant. A very early and important travel account. Not in Atabey or Blackmer. Rare.
