ANDREA VALERIO: Historia della Guerra di Candia. Venice Bagloni 1679
First and only edition of one of the rarest 17th-century works on Candia.
Small
Folio (26 × 19 cm). Contemporary full vellum, slightly soiled, some wear at corners, manuscript title on spine. Text clean and bright, with only isolated light wear in a few pages. Complete: title, [4], 751 pp., [12]. Overall a very good, clean copy of a bulky
imposing folio volume.
Valiero fought bravely in the Cretan War and took part in several naval battles during its early phase, particularly in the Dardanelles in 1646. In 1667 he was elected Governor of the Ionian Islands. After the fall of Candia, he wrote the full history of the Cretan War (1644–1669), based on both Venetian archives and his own personal memories.
This remains one of the most comprehensive and rare accounts of 17th-century Crete.
