THOMAS SMITH: An account of the Greek church with several historical remarks to which is added an account of the Greek church under Cyrillus Loucaris, Patriarch of Constantinople, with a relation of his sufferrings and death. London 1680.
First edition.
8vo (18 × 12 cm). Modern leather over boards, spine handsomely decorated. Complete: title, [22], 303 pp., [14]. Text clean and bright; a few light spots of foxing on the title page. Overall in very good condition.
Smith, a chaplain at Constantinople during the second half of the 17th century, acquired a profound knowledge of the Orthodox Church.
A part of the book is devoted to Cyrillus Loukaris whim whom the author had close relations. As the Greek Church was omnipresent in everyday life, his account describes in exhaustive detail the sufferings of the Greeks under Ottoman rule, their
daily customs (weddings, funerals, feasts, religious ceremonies, and festivities), as well as notable events in Constantinople.
