PETER OLUF BRONDSTED: Reise i Graekenland i Jarene 1810-1813. Kjobenhabn (Copenhagen) 1844 First complete edition in the original Danish, with some parts of the account published earlier in French and German. In 8vo 20 x 13 cm. Complete in two volumes: contemporary typical Danish binding, plain leather over marbled leather and marbled boards. Text with some light foxing and spotting. Portrait, title, [6], 418 p., folding map (Kaart till Brondstads reiser i Graekenland), probably one of the earliest Danish maps of Greece, [2], 552 p. Manuscript ownership inscriptions on the pastedowns of both volumes by William St Clair, leading Hellenist. Overall in very good condition and with fine provenance. Bronsted (1780–1842), a Danish philologist, joined an expedition in Greece with Otto Stackelberg and others, though the group eventually went separate ways. Bronsted took part in several excavations in Greece, notably in Aegina and Kea, and traveled extensively throughout the country. He returned to Copenhagen in 1813, revisited the Ionian Islands in 1820, and much later retired in Copenhagen, where he became rector of the University and supervised the publication of his extensive travel accounts in Greece. The two volumes of his writings were finally published posthumously, following his death from a fall from his horse. This is the original complete edition of his travels in Greece. References: Blackmer 213 and 214 (French and German editions), not in Atabey
