JAMES EMERSON and GIUSEPPE PECHIO: Tableau de la Grece en 1825 ou recit des voyages de J. Emerson et du Compte Pecchio. Paris 1826
First edition in French. In 8vo 21 x 14 cm, contemporary leather over boards, boards slightly rubbed at edges. Text clean and bright. Complete: [17], 464 p. On front pastedown, fine ex-libris of
Cattaui Pasha (1862–1942), an important Egyptian businessman, writer, and politician. Overall in very good condition.
The work comprises the accounts of
Emerson and
Pecchio from their travels in Greece. Pecchio traveled to Greece hoping to witness a glorious triumph of the Greeks, his enthusiasm fueled by various reports and by the wave of Philhellenic idealism then sweeping across Europe. He became bitterly disillusioned but returned several times and ultimately met his death in Aegina in 1826.
The present French edition contains additional material by Jean Cohen on events up to 1826, absent from the English edition. An important Philhellenic work.
