This work on the geography of Macedonia was the dissertation (Thèse) presented by Desdevises at the Sorbonne for his Doctorat d’État. At a very early period, when much of Macedonia was still unexplored, he undertook the ambitious task of identifying ancient place names within the contemporary geographical framework.
The author travelled through the region, consulted extensively the works of earlier travelers and all available sources, and produced a comprehensive study that earned him both his doctorate and an
award from the French Geographical Society.
The large folded map included here is among the earliest scientific maps of ancient Macedonia. A significant and early scholarly contribution.
