Pietsch (1824–1911),
a German painter, took part in the German archaeological mission to Olympia in 1876. This volume contains his
detailed account of Olympia and the surrounding areas of the Peloponnese during the first spring of the excavations, together
with reports on the results of the following two campaigns.
As a painter, Pietsch also had leisure to travel widely through Arcadia, Messenia, and other regions, recording the landscapes, villages, and people of Greece as they appeared in the late 19th century. His sensitivity to light and natural beauty permeates the narrative, making it not only an archaeological document but also a valuable travel account.
A
very rare work, seldom encountered on the market.
