CHARLES de MOUY: Lettres du Bosphore, Constantinople Athenes. Paris 1879 First and only edition. In 8vo (19x13 cm). Contemporary leather over boards, text with light scattered spotting. Complete: [8], 326 p., [1], and 8 engraved plates as called for. Overall in very good condition. Charles de Mouy (1834–1922), a French diplomat, travelled extensively in Greece and the Levant during the 1870s. His account is based exclusively on first-hand information and personal impressions gathered during his long residence in the East between 1875 and 1878. The first part covers his main travels in the Levant, the second provides a detailed description of Constantinople and its surrounding areas where he lived for three years, while the last part is devoted to his travels in Athens and Greece during 1878. A fine and information-rich narrative by a perspicacious diplomat, offering valuable insight into the Levant and newly independent Greece. Rare.
