PAUL BRANDT: Von Athen zum Tempelthal, Reiseerinnerungen aus Griechenland mit 24 Abbildungen. Gutersloh 1894 First and only edition. Large 8vo (22x14 cm). Contemporary leather over boards, slightly trimmed. Text clean and bright, with old stamp on title-page and in one leaf. Complete: 103 p., with 2 folding plates, 22 text illustrations, and several photographs. Manuscript ownership inscription of William St Clair, leading Hellenist, on front pastedown. Overall in very good condition and with fine provenance. Brandt (1852–1910), a German philologist and later politician from Alsace, travelled in Greece in 1892. After Athens, he visited Eleusis, Thebes, Orchomenos, Delphi, Lamia, Volos, and returned via Euboea to Piraeus. His account is detailed, accurate, and full of valuable observations, based on a daily diary. William St Clair praised the work for its scholarly value. Privately published in the small German town of Gütersloh, the account is scarce.
