SEIGNEUR NOMPAR DE CAUMONT: Voyage d Outremer en Jerusalem l An 1418. Paris 1858 First edition of this early travel to Greece and the Levant, from the only manuscript preserved in the British Library. In 4to (25 × 19 cm). Contemporary leather over marbled boards with very light wear. Internally clean and bright, printed on yellow paper. Complete: [28], 193 pp., with one facsimile from the manuscript. An artistic mid-19th-century small print run edition , produced in Évreux (Normandy) by a little-known Parisian bookseller, most likely connected with the Caumont noble family. Ex-libris of Paul Lagrave, the noted 19th-century French architect. Overall, a fine copy. Caumont traveled in the Levant in 1418, and the religious spirit pervades his entire account. He departed from Barcelona for the Greek Archipelago, avoiding the usual Venetian route. After a stay in Crete, he reached Rhodes, where he met another nobleman from Navarre, and together they continued to the Holy Land by way of Cyprus. On the return journey from Jerusalem they landed at Famagusta and visited the Lusignan king in Nicosia, then spent two months again in Rhodes. Attempting to sail home, a violent storm forced them to take refuge in Modon before continuing their voyage. A very important early travel account, filled with vivid descriptions of several parts of the Levant.
