BARON VON TOTT und DE PEYSSONNEL: Herrn Baron von Tott s Nachrichten von der Turken und Tartaren mit Herrn Peyssonnels Verbesserungen und Zusatzen. Frankfurt Leipzig 1788 First edition in German. In 8vo 19 x 11 cm, one volume covering Tott’s description of the Turks and Peyssonnel’s works, another volume covering the Tatars. The German edition is adorned with fine copper-engraved plates, mostly depicting Levantine people (the French original is without plates). Contemporary leather over boards. Complete: title [1], 312 p. [1], and 20 plates (one folding). Plates and text clean, some scattered spotting in places. Overall very good. From all the several editions of Tott’s travels, only this one and the edition printed in Amsterdam include plates, and they are different. Tott stayed twenty years in Turkey. He traveled to Cyprus, Crete, and several other islands. He had a different vision than Peyssonnel regarding the future of the Ottoman Empire. In this book, published during the Russo-Turkish war, the two strategies partition or preservation of the Ottoman state become apparent. Rare edition, richly illustrated. References: Not in Atabey or Blackmer (this edition)
