D. M. SCHOTT und M. MEBOLD: Taschenbuch fur Freunde der Geschichte des Griechischen Volkes alterer und neurer seit. Heidelberg 1824 First edition. In 12mo 16 x 10 cm, in contemporary plain boards, as published, and in the contemporary publisher’s plain hard paper box with printed title on the side of the box. Text with light scattered spotting. Complete: portrait, title, [10], 360 p., three plates, and one folding plate of music. Manuscript ownership inscription of William St Clair, leading Hellenist, on front pastedown. Overall in very good condition and with fine provenance. A very important Philhellenic work (see Alfred Noe: Der Philhellenismus in der westeuropäischen Literatur, 1994). The text briefly presents Greek culture from antiquity to modern times and describes in detail the events in Greece from the beginning of the Revolution up to 1824. The three plates depict Demosthenes, Mavrokordatos, and the house of Mavrokordatos in Corinth in 1822. The final section contains Greek songs in the original Greek, including the Θούριος of Rigas, Byron’s, Korais’ Άσμα Πολεμιστήριο, and several others in very early publications. The large folding music plate includes Ypsilantis’ Θούριος, with contemporary manuscript annotations. A very rare work.
