KARL KANNENBERG: KleinAsiens Naturschatze seine wichtigsten Tiere, Kultupflanzen und Mineralschatze. Berlin 1897 First edition. In 4to (24x17 cm). Publisher’s original decorated hard covers. Text clean and bright, only with old stamps on title page. Complete: [10], 278 p., [1], and 42 views and plans. Overall in very good condition. Kannenberg (1823–1906) travelled repeatedly in Asia Minor in the early 1890s, penetrating deep into regions then still little visited. His detailed account ranges from the cultural and social conditions of the Ottoman provinces to the economic prospects of this vast and underdeveloped peninsula, rich in minerals and natural resources. He argued that European colonization was necessary and imminent for Anatolia’s economic revival. The work is richly illustrated with 30 original photographs taken by the author, offering an invaluable visual record of the period. A lengthy, scientific, and rare account of Asia Minor.
