Grisebach (1814–1879), a famous German botanist and phytogeographer, undertook expeditions in Provence, Norway, the Balkans, and Asia Minor to locate and study species. This set covers his detailed travel account in the Levant during 1839 and the complete corpus of his discoveries. The first volume narrates his land journey to Constantinople, his travels in Bithynia, around Proussa and western Asia Minor, and his multiple excursions in Thrace, where he spent two months, including three weeks exploring Mount Athos. The second volume covers Chalkidiki, Thessaloniki, and his extensive travels throughout Macedonia, before returning through Albania. A rare travel account, absent from all major collections of the area, here coupled with the second set, the scientific publication of the expedition’s discoveries, with the identification and descriptions of thousands of Greek flora. The first scientific botanic expedition in Greece and the Levant, a complete set.
