FRANCISCUS ERASMUS: Neue und kurtze Beschreibung des Konigreichs Ungarn, dessen furnehmsten Stadten und Vestungen… absonderlich was in dem jetzigen Turcken-krieg von an. 1663 bis 1664… Nurnberg 1664 First edition. Small 8vo (13 × 8 cm). Contemporary vellum, soiled, with fine imperial double-headed eagle stamped on front cover. 378 pp. Complete, but this is the issue without plates. Internally clean. Overall very good. Erasmus Finx (1627-1694), a German polymath and prolific author, published numerous works, but this is his only book devoted to the Ottoman Levant. It treats the Ottoman possessions in the Balkans (including the Kingdom of Hungary at the time) and the campaign of the Christian League against the Turks in 1663-1664-a diversionary effort to forestall the Ottoman conquest of Crete. As the fate of Candia (Heraklion) was the main issue of the day, all these operations are presented in connection with the long Cretan siege. The work includes detailed descriptions of numerous places and cities in the Balkans in the mid-17th century. Not in Atabey or Blackmer. Rare.
