Amsterdam 1702 Second edition. 4to (22 × 18 cm). Contemporary full leather, edges of spine professionally restored; light rubbing at corners. Complete: [4], 495, [8] pp. with all 17 beautiful copper-engraved plates (some folding) offering remarkable views. Overall a very good copy. Melton was a British traveler in the service of the Dutch East India Company. His original manuscript accounts are now lost, and the work was never translated. He traveled extensively between 1660 and 1677. The first book describes his two-year stay in Egypt, with vivid depictions of local life. The third book recounts his second journey in the Levant, including Anatolia, Syria, and Armenia. He ventured through the heartlands of Asia Minor and Pontus at a time when Europeans almost never penetrated these regions. Later, his journey continued to Persia and the East Indies. One section also covers North America and contains one of the earliest printed descriptions of Niagara Falls. The fine plates, engraved by Jan Luyken, one of the foremost Dutch artists of his time are among his best productions. Rare and valuable early 17th-century travel account of the Levant. Not in Atabey or Blackmer.
