Thiersch (1784–1860), a famous German classical scholar, was also an ardent supporter of Greek Independence and an important Philhellene throughout the years of the Greek struggle. A street in central Athens
(Θιέρσου) still bears his name. He also played a crucial role in securing the Greek crown for
Othon.
This is his main publication on Greece, issued in French.
The work is of great importance, as after a detailed presentation of Greece in the aftermath of the War,
he proposed concrete steps to establish a functional Greek state. These proposals and his advice, however, were never materialized.
