PYOTR TCHIHATCHEFF: Une page sur l Orient. Paris 1868 First edition. In 8vo (18x12 cm). Contemporary leather over boards. Text clean and bright, with only some light scattered spotting in a few pages. Complete: [12], 346 p. Overall in very good condition. Pierre de Tchihatcheff (1812–1890), a Russian naturalist and explorer, was the principal investigator of Asia Minor in the mid-19th century. Initially serving as a diplomat in Constantinople in the 1840s, he soon abandoned diplomacy to dedicate himself fully to exploration. Between 1847 and 1863 he undertook a series of expeditions across Anatolia then almost entirely unknown to Europeans. His monumental scientific work embraced geography, geology, zoology, botany, and paleontology, published in a series of separate works over more than two decades. This volume offers the summarized, comprehensive account of his sixteen years of research. All Tchihatcheff’s publications are rare. Absent from Atabey (though four other works by him are listed), not in Blackmer.
