WINKLER JOHANNES: Ein Besuch in Kairo, Jerusalem und Konstantinopel. Linz 1886 First edition. In 8vo (21x13 cm). Original publisher’s paper covers with light wear, upper cover weak. Text clean and bright. Complete: 184 p. Overall in very good condition. Winkler, an Austrian traveler, visited the Levant in 1885. His journey began in Trieste, continued through Greece where he was profoundly impressed by the country’s beauty - and then followed the classic itinerary to Egypt, Palestine, Lebanon, and Constantinople. His account includes a lengthy description of Constantinople, the great capital of the Levant. Winkler’s observations are notable for their accuracy and ethnographic interest, recording the everyday life and the customs of the local populations, often perceived by him as exotic or unusual. Published in Linz, the author’s hometown, this scarce travel account almost certainly appeared in a small regional print run, making it a rare survival.
