Journal Des Debats 17th of September 1821 Relative calm has returned to Smyrna; the bazaars have reopened, and life is slowly regaining its rhythm. The Ottoman fleet bypassed Samos and sailed toward Rhodes. Although the two opposing fleets are in close proximity, neither side appears eager for a decisive battle. The Ottoman troops previously amassed across from Samos have now dispersed. The prospect of an immediate war with Russia is receding. However, arrests of Greeks continue. Postal services and the city's food supply are gradually being restored.In a serious naval incident, a Turkish warship attacked two Austrian vessels in the straits of Chios, resulting in numerous sailor fatalities. In response to the ensuing diplomatic protests, the Turks alleged that the ships were actively supporting the Greek rebels.
