COMMENTARIIS THEODORI BALSAMONI NOMOCANON PHOTII PATRIARCAE CONSTANTINOPOLITANI. PARIS 1615 EDITIO PRINCEPS, in large 4to, medieval parchment with manuscript notes reused as book binding, with few wear, a fine unusual binding, text clean and bright, complete [14],183p.,287p.,first part text only in Greek, second part Latin translation, overall in very good condition. A major historical source for the late 12th century Byzantine history. Balsamon was titular Patriarch of Antioch residing in Constantinople, he was a scholar and he was commissioned by the Emperor to update and explain the ruling laws (both civil and Church laws). His Scholia, commentaries, are essential because they explain how the ancient laws, the Nomocanon, compiled by Photius in the 9th century, were applied in the medieval world of the late 12th century. Many annotations are of the utmost historical importance, Balsamon is our principal source for several events, particularly in Anatolia when that time was under Turkish invasion. He was used extensively by Professor Bryonnis in his seminal work on Byzantine Anatolia. A primary source also for social and economic life in Byzantium. Very rare
