Pierre Bergeron published in Paris several very early travel accounts regarding the Levant, all written in manuscript before the age of printing. This collection has been greatly enlarged in this edition with more accounts and adorned with fine maps and views,not present in the Parisian shorter collection. They form a fine medieval collection of early travel accounts, praised since the time of its publication. Includes some major travel accounts, among others, as:1. The voyage of the famous Benjamin of Tudela, a medieval Jew, who travelled around the world, at his time the world was mostly the Mediterranean,his travel contains invaluable information for 12th century Greece, visited in 1154 and described many Greek cities places in details and as well as places in Asia Minor, still Byzantine.2. The 13th century travels of Jean du Carpin and N. Ascelin, ambassadors of the Pope to the Tartars through Greece and Anatolia. 3. The mid 13th century travel of Guillaume De Rubriquis, ambassador of the French king, to the Mongols also through Greece and Asia Minor, who clearly states that in Anatolia the Turks constituted a very small minority and the area was (still) largely populated by Greeks.4. Haiton s famous Oriental History, a late 13th century unique Armenian travel account and history written in Armenian Cilicia dealing exclusively with Anatolia. Haiton travelled all around Asia Minor visiting Trebizond, Konia, Proussa etc 5. A.Contarini travel to Persia, as Venetian Ambassador to Huzun Hasan in 1473 through the Black sea and the Pontic Alps, who landed east of Trebizond in a still Christian territory and clearly states that despite the recent (then) Turkish conquest of Trebizond, most of the Pontos was still held by the Greeks.6. Mandeville famous travels and other travel accounts related to Tartary and the Levant. All these travel accounts contain invaluable information for the Levant during late medieval times.
