Dumont (1667-1727), a French officer, has been arrested in Strasburg in 1689. He escape in Italy and via Malta arrived in Constantinople in 1690. He will stay finally for almost two years in Smirni and will return in late 1692. The narrative covers the travel to Constantinople through the Greek archipelago and gives detailed accounts of the Ottoman multinational society, customs, the legal system, the condition of women and slaves. The description of the Greek islands and the Greek societies in Constantinople and Smirni are very valuable. English editions are much rarer than the French.
