PARIS 1877 First edition, large in 4to, contemporary leather restored over boards,edges red, title with Austrian ex library stamps,no other marks, complete [14],537p.[4], light scattered spotting in very few pages, text clean and bright, overall in very good condition. Saint Priest (1735-1821) was French Ambassador to Constantinople (from 1768 to 1783). This is the official report, the memoires,who had addressed to the French King when returning from his embassy in Constantinople. It has been located in the French Archives and published one century later. It is a very detailed presentation of the Ottoman state of the 1770s,exclusively for the use of the French State. It cover everything,from the administration structure to the detailed products of trade of each region, population,ethnic composition etc,very valuable information for many areas of Greece and the Greeks of the late 18th century. The memoir is mostly focused on the commerce with the Levant. It includes lengthy appendices with several other official documents attached to the memoir with many original treaties of capitulations and their clauses for the trade etc. A very valuable source for Greece and the Levant.
