COMPOSITE ALBUM WITH 65 ENGRAVED VIEWS AND MAPS OF THE AUSTRIAN-RUSSIAN-TURKISH WAR OF 1788-1791 DEPICTING VIEWS OF GREECE AND THE BALKANS ( ROUMANIA, SERBIA, BOSNIA) COMPILED FROM PLATES PUBLISHED MOSTLY IN CONTEMPORARY NEWS PAPERS IN VIENNA. [no place or date, but] VIENNA late 18th century [mostly 1788-1792] All first edition, in large 8vo oblong, later cloth over boards, most plates attached in contemporary papers, paper with clear Austrian 18th century watermarks, few wear on plates, mostly in fine condition. A very unusual gathering of the utmost rarity. Compiled obviously during or just after the Austrian-Turkish war of 1788-1791 and containing mostly plates of the events of war which were published in contemporary newspapers, or distributed that time in Vienna, the Album create a visual appearance of the Balkans of the late 18th century.Some of the plates are signed by Muller, a well known engraver of that time (who engraved later the Charta of Rigas) most are unsigned, few are dated 1788-1790, most were cut just at the edges before attachment,few, bigger, were cut more to be included as double page views in the Album creating nice panoramas of some cities, at the end 18 were included as printed. There is no doubt that most of these plates were published in contemporary newspapers in Vienna. The inclusion of small engraved views in Viennese newspapers started at the end of the 18th century to provide, outside of the news, a virtual appearance.Of the utmost rarity today, as most of them perished.
