DON LUIS HEBURA Y ATRIERO: LA VIDA DE LOS SIETE SABIOS DE GRECIA,ENRIQUECIDA DE SUS MAS PRECIOSAS MAXIMAS. MADRID Imp. Joaquin Sanchez 1738 18th century Spanish edition, in small 8vo, contemporary vellum soiled, text with some scattered spotting, complete:[40]214p.[3] and 7 copper engraving portraits in the text, overall in very good condition. While it was not the first publication in Spanish of the work of the seven sages of Greece this was a completely new and popular interpretation by Hebura y Atriero for the Spanish Enlightenment. He did not just translated the ancient texts,he curated the sentences and biographies to emphasize the moral lessons. The book focused on practical ethics and provide a direct access for the classical wisdom, while the subject was famously documented by Diogenis Laertius, this work is a specific Spanish adaptation to provide the readers with a lighter text of the lives, legends and famous maxims of the founding thinkers of Ancient Greek wisdom (Thales of Miletus, Solon, Chilon of Sparta, Pittakos, Bias, Periandros and Kleovoulos). It focused clearly a much wider public, tried to give access to the Greek Philosophy in the Spanish middle class. This edition is adorned with seven finely executed engraved portraits representing the ancient Greek philosophers, to visualize the text to the readers. These publications boosted Philhellenism in critical audience. It was the very beginning of Enlightenment and Philhellenism.
