SONNINI: VOYAGE EN GRECE ET EN TURQUIE FAIT PAR ORDRE DE LOUIS XVI. PARIS 1801 First edition, complete two volumes of text in 8vo and the Atlas in FOLIO, contemporary leather over boards for the text, contemporary publishers boards for the Atlas, complete 460.,460., and the 7 plates of the Atlas, including a big folding copy of the Sultan s Firman and the huge (100x95cm) copper engraved map of Greece by Poirson in outline contemporary colors, some wear on the binding of the text volumes, the boards of Atlas rubbed with cover of spine missing but still held,very light scattered spotting on very few pages in the text volumes, text clean and bright,few light scattered marginal spotting in two small plates, overall in very good condition. Sonnini travelled in Greece in 1778-1780. He visited Crete, Rhodes, Cyprus and many of the Cyclades and Dodecanese islands. Only Thessaloniki and Smyrna were visited from the cities, as plague was raging. A very important source for late 19th century Greece, including description of Thessaloniki, a city rarely visited that time. The impressive map of eastern Mediterranean is a masterpiece of cartography for the Levant.
