JAMES FERGUSON: THE MAUSOLEUM AT HALICARNASSUS RESTORED IN CONFORMITY WITH THE RECENT DISCOVERED REMAINS. LONDON 1862 First edition, small FOLIO, contemporary brown cloth with two light spots in back cover, complete 43p. And 4 lithographed plates, dedication by the author,ex libris of Edinburgh Architectural Association, text and plates clean and bright, in very good condition. Ferguson was a famed architectural Historian, By the early 1860s Newton has uncovered several of the remains of the Mausoleum in Asia Minor and brought them in England. But no one still had a certain idea how it looked originally, the ancient descriptions were confusing and the remains not sufficient. Ferguson, a master of architecture,with this work challenge the proposed restoration by the official architect of the expedition Pullan.Ferguson proposal is famous for its tiered, pyramidal roof and its attempt to reconcile the Grecian aesthetic with the massive scale required by the archaeological finds. A very important contribution for a scientific reconstruction of one of the seven miracles of ancient Greek world. Still a reference.
