[PEDRO ESTALA]: EL VIAGERO UNIVERSAL O NOTICIA DEL MUNDO ANTIGUO Y NUEVO (TOMO I: ISLA DE CHIPRE, SYRIA, EGIPTO, GRECIA, LA TURQUIA, TOMO II: LA TURQUIA, GEORGIA, MINGRELIA, ARMENIA, TOMO II SUPLEMENTO: SYRIA, EGIPTO, ISLA DE CHIPRE). MADRID 1795-1801 First edition, in 8vo, complete in three volumes all parts relating to the Levant, 396p., 409p., 382p., contemporary full leather Spanish binding slightly rubbed, spine richly gilt, text clean and bright, overall in very good condition. A monumental Spanish travel work. This collection is one of the more ambitious projects of the Spanish Enlightenment, serving as a vast encyclopedia of global geography, culture and history. Athough based on the French work of Delaporte, the Spanish version was significantly expanded and rewritten by Estala (who signed with the initials D. P.E. P.) including Spanish original accounts for several countries. These three first volumes cover all published for the Levant. It is clear that the information for Cyprus was greatly extended, including first hand contemporary Spanish material, most probably provided from Spanish merchants that were very active in Eastern Mediterranean in 1780/1790s. There is a chapter for Cyprus in the first volume that follow Delaporte, but in the supplement, there is a further independent chapter of more than 60 pages that include a very detailed contemporary description of the island. The part of Greece also includes additional information. A lengthy work that provided a very clear picture of the Greek lands to the Spanish public. Very unusual work, absent from all travel collections of the area.
