JOLY Alexis Victor: VUES DE LA GRECE MODERNE, Paris 1824. First and only edition. Oblong Folio, beautiful contemporary card boards, very slightly worn at extremities, complete: Lithographed vignette on title, introduction text of 5 pages, ten (10) fine lithographed plates with rare big early views of Greek landscapes and people (including uncommon views of Athens), accompanied with pages with their descriptive text, some light spotting mostly marginal in few plates, overall in very good condition. One of the most aesthetically pleasant and historically significant Philhellenic publications published during the Greek Revolution.Joly was a painter who visited Greece in 1814, the views capture the light and mood of the Greek landscape. The views have been lithographed after real paintings, made on the spot in Greece. This book was specifically published to capitalize on the European sympathy for the Greek struggle. The work is scarce (Blackmer 881,Not in Atabey). A fine Atlas of nice original views of Greece of early 19th century
