Filimon was a patriot and a former secretary of the Filiki Etairia. The loss of Crete, that had not joined the independent new state, was badly received in many Greek circles. This fine very early publication in the new capital Athens about Crete is a major achievement of the Greek Enlightenment in its last phase. It is a Greek nationalistic publication with clear message:Crete is Greek. Filimon almost exclusively published works that served the Greek cause. Bernardos (1777-1852), a Cretan scholar and fighter during Greek revolution,was also a former member of the Filiki Etairia. He did not only simply translated Dapper older description of Crete,he added notes and a huge chapter about the ancient coins of Crete. A major contribution, the first Greek publication devoted to Crete, authored and published by Greeks just after the liberation.
