PARIS 1855 First edition, in 8vo, contemporary publishers paper covers, complete 474p., text clean and bright with very few occasional spotting in few places, overall in very good condition Ubicini, a French who lived in Constantinople for many years and spoke Turkish and Greek traveled widely in Greece and Turkey and provide a fine picture of the social life of the Ottoman Levant of mid 19th century. A big chapter is consecrated on women and their social status. He travelled around Constantinople, in Macedonia, the Greek peninsula and northern Asia Minor, some of chapters cover his travel accounts, other are focused in Ottoman administration and statistics. He was a strong supporter of Tanzimat reforms,he became one of the leading western experts on the Ottoman Empire as he left many years in the Levant.
