PARIS 1909 First edition, in 8vo, contemporary original paper covers frayed at edges, complete 228p., text clean and bright, overall in very good condition. This account is the scientific doctoral Thessis of Lovinesco at Paris Sorbonne University. An important early work on French travelers in Greece during the 19th century. He analyzed one by one many French travel accounts in Greece and accurately tracks how the travelers interests shifter during that period from looking only ruins to looking at the modern people of the country. He critiques how French travelers arrived with a fixed idea of Greece expecting to find Pericles and instead they found a complex Mediterranean reality that they struggled to reconcile with their classical education. The book provides a detailed look at the French Philhellenism showing how literature influenced French diplomatic and military intervention in Greece. An early academic work on travels in Greece.
